The Star

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
1By the star, as it falls.
2Your friend has not strayed, nor has he erred.
3Nor does he speak out of desire.
4It is, but a revealed revelation.
5Taught to him by the Extremely Powerful.
6Possessor of vigor. He settled.
7While he was at the highest horizon.
8Then he drew near, and He hovered around.
9He was within two bows’ length, or closer.
10Then He revealed to His servant what He revealed.
11The heart did not lie about what he saw.
12Will you dispute with him concerning what he saw?
13He saw him in another descent.
14At the Lote Tree of Extremity.
15Near which is the Garden of Refuge.
16As there covered the Lotus Tree what covered it.
17The sight did not waver, nor did it overreach.
18He saw some of the Great Signs of his Lord.
19Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza?
20And Manat, the third one, the other?
21Are you to have the males, and He the females?
22What a bizarre distribution.
23These are nothing but names, which you have invented, you and your forefathers—a practice Allah has never authorized. They follow nothing but assumptions, and what the ego desires, although guidance has come to them from their Lord.
24Or is the human being to have whatever he desires?
25To Allah belong the Last and the First.
26How many an angel is there in the heavens whose intercession avails nothing, except after Allah gives permission to whomever He wills, and approves?
27Those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels with female names.
28They have no knowledge of it. They follow nothing but assumptions, and assumptions are no substitute for the truth.
29So avoid whoever has turned away from Our remembrance, and desires nothing but the present life.
30That is the extent of their knowledge. Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who has accepted guidance.
31To Allah belongs whatever is in Heaven and whatever is on Earth. He will penalize those who commit evil according to their deeds. And He will reward those who do good with the best.
32Those who avoid major sins and indecencies—except what is slight—your Lord is of Vast Forgiveness. He knew you well, ever since He produced you from the earth, and ever since you were embryos in your mothers’ wombs. So do not acclaim your own virtue; He is fully aware of the righteous.
33Have you considered him who turned away?
34And gave a little, and then withheld?
35Does he possess knowledge of the unseen, and can therefore foresee?
36Or was he not informed of what is in the Scrolls of Moses?
37And of Abraham, who fulfilled?
38That no bearer of burdens bears the burdens of another.
39And that the human being attains only what he strives for.
40And that his efforts will be witnessed.
41Then he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward.
42And that to your Lord is the finality.
43And that it is He who causes laughter and weeping.
44And that it is He who causes death and gives life.
45And that it is He who created the two types—the male and the female.
46From a drop when ejected.
47And that upon Him lies the second genesis.
48And that it is He who enriches and impoverishes.
49And that it is He who is Lord of Sirius.
50And that it is He who destroyed Aad the Former.
51And Thamood, sparing none.
52And the people of Noah aforetime; for they were most unjust and most oppressive.
53And He razed the overthrown cities.
54And He covered them with whatever covered them.
55So which of your Lord's marvels will you deny?
56This is a warning, just like the previous warnings.
57The imminent has drawn near.
58None besides Allah can unveil it.
59Do you marvel at this discourse?
60And laugh, and do not weep?
61Lost in your frivolity?
62So bow down to Allah—and worship!
