Ways of Ascent

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
1A questioner asked about the impending punishment.
2For the disbelievers—to be repelled by none.
3From Allah, Lord of the ascending ways.
4To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit on a Day whose duration is fifty thousand years.
5So be patient, with beautiful patience.
6They see it distant.
7But We see it near.
8On the Day when the sky becomes like molten brass.
9And the mountains become like tufted wool.
10No friend will ask about a friend.
11They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish he could be redeemed from the punishment of that Day by his children.
12And his spouse, and his brother.
13And his family that sheltered him.
14And everyone on earth altogether, just to save him.
15By no means! It is a Raging Flame.
16It strips away the scalps.
17It invites him who once turned his back and fled.
18And accumulated and hoarded.
19The human being was created anxious.
20Touched by adversity, he is fretful.
21Touched by good, he is ungenerous.
22Except for the prayerful.
23Those who are constant in their prayers.
24And those in whose wealth is a rightful share.
25For the beggar and the deprived.
26And those who affirm the Day of Judgment.
27And those who dread their Lord’s punishment.
28Their Lord’s punishment is not to be taken for granted.
29And those who guard their private parts.
30Except from their spouses, or those living under their control, for then they are blameless.
31But whoever seeks beyond that—these are the transgressors.
32And those who observe their trusts and their promises.
33And those who uphold their testimony.
34And those who are dedicated to their prayers.
35These will be honored in Gardens.
36What is with those who disbelieve, scrambling towards you?
37From the right, and from the left, in droves?
38Is every one of them aspiring to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?
39No indeed! We created them from what they know.
40I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, that We are Capable.
41Of replacing them with what is better than they, and We are not to be surpassed.
42So leave them to blunder and play, until they meet their Day which they are promised.
43The Day when they will emerge from the graves in a rush, as if they were racing to a target.
44Their eyes downcast, overwhelmed by disgrace. This is the Day which they were promised.
